They have that functionality turned off, you're not overlooking anything. You can use the img tags, but cannot attach.

Thank you. I see that I can use the image tags, but I can not find a way to place a picture image between them. I was able to copy and paste some text between them, but the associated picture (.jpg) image would not paste. If images of text are the only things allowed, "[Img]" is very misleading and not very useful.

Is it really that limited in PMs?

I'm not quite sure you understand how to use the image tags, so allow me to explain:

The functionality of these tags is to allow you to paste an image URL surrounded by the img tags. Then the image will automagically show up in the body of your post or personal message once you "submit" or "preview". You don't paste the image itself between the tags, just the location of the image on the web.

The image tags will not allow for posting an image that is on your computer. That would require attachment, which is disabled for PMs - when you attach a file it is uploaded to the forum from your computer.

Hope this helps.

You are right; I was not understanding, but I was beginning to get there. Zenta and Kurte had each sent me PMs with images. By analyzing those, I found they each had placed URL site references within the Img tags. So their pictures were already on the net and not on their private computers as mine are.

It was a good explanation. It helps me understand that what I want to do is impossible. It doesn't help me achieve the impossible.
And here I thought you were the problem solver for the organization!
Thank you.

so we are all wondering... were is this picture? lol

you can host your images on many sites. i use

http://photobucket.com/

hovering your mouse over the image will bring up the code URLS. seen here at the bottom of the drop down list

Note the IMG tab is already surrounding the text so it can just be directly posted to the forum without having to highlight and press the tag.

She is. That's why she disabled the ability to host files in PM's. There are security risks, and we just don't want the forum database to be filled with things that do not benefit the entire forum community.

This brings up my question... Is it possible for each of use to access our own uploaded (attachments) in this database? Kind of like a users gallery.?

There certainly is! Click on User Control Panel > Manage Attachments.

Of course I meant my problems. You may have mistaken me for someone who cares about the general good of all such as your concerns for security risks and filling up the database appear to address. :P Thanks for all the good explanations. This may be the final impetus to set up my own web site.

A final wrap-up for those of you who have been avidly following my misadventures: YES images can be indirectly passed in Private Messages, BUT ONLY IF they are already stored somewhere on line so that a URL link can be forwarded in the message. It turned out for my limited purposes that a service such as PhotoBucket made much more sense than establishing a personal website just to store a few images.

My thanks to Kurte, Zenta, Innerbreed, Robot Dude, and Snailkeeper for their patience and assistance in guiding me to this happy solution. :)

What do you suppose she does with all those snails anyway? :?

I just joined another Forum (for Heli's) which is also "Powered by phpBB", and they have a "download post" in the header of each message on the forum.

"Download post" is great! Can we have/get it?

Thanks!

Thanks

It should be possible to post normal links like:
www.lynxmotion.com

With regard to the "Download post" - we'll check out if the mod is still available for the latest version of pHpBB. Can you send a link to a forum which has that feature?
